Core Classes // Terms & Conditions

    • Core classes run over 10 week blocks, which align to the Qld School Terms.

    • Core fees are $840.

    • Students pay a non-refundable deposit of $200 to secure their spot in a Core class before the start of the term. Full payment of fees is required by the end of week 2 of the term. Students will be notified of this via email. To secure your spot you can either pay the non-refundable deposit or the full term fees.

    • Core students are expected to use commercial clay. Core students are welcome to use school clay for practice, the expectation is that Core students won’t fire practice clay.

    • If you don’t turn up or change your mind once classes start, you have forfeited your fees and cannot ask for a refund. Please make sure you are available for all of your classes.

    • We do not offer refunds for missed classes or cancellations during the block. We can offer you studio access between 1 - 5pm Mon - Thurs & Friday 1 - 3pm. This is untutored studio access only, please save your practice related questions to you home class and teacher.

    • If you have any special circumstances relating to classes we are happy to discuss this with you.

    • Being in a Core class means you have more autonomy over your clay practice and choose your own projects. When issues arise you are welcome to ask your teacher for advice and guidance.

    • Core students have more access to the studio and also opportunities to show their work within the Clayschool community.

    • We do run term challenges within our Core classes these are assigned at the beginning of every term.

    • If you are a current student and would like to switch days for your next course please email us before hand before choosing a different time slot. We make sure we have enough spaces for current students before we make switches between classes.

    • Core students get 1 bag of clay each term which is included in your fees. You are welcome to purchase more clay. Keep in mind we fire to stoneware (Cone 8-12, 1260° - 1300°) - have a chat to your teachers before purchasing clay from ceramics suppliers.

    • Please use the school clay for practicing your forms & ideas but then recycle this work. We prefer if you only fire commercial clay once you’re in Core.

    • All of the equipment is for all students use. No one has any right to any particular piece of equipment or area. When in class you have priority for tools and equipment. We expect that you communicate respectfully with other students when there is a greater demand with one particular piece of equipment.

    • You are welcome to use any tools at Clayschool as long as they are treated respectfully, cleaned and replaced in their designated spot. Now that you are more committed to your clay learning, we find that Core students start creating their own tool kits. They become an important part of your of your practice and treasured items.

    • Tea and Coffee is provided and we have a shared morning tea/supper roster.

    • Core can work in any area of the warehouse, if there are 2 Core classes on it is expected that we are all respectful of each other and communicative. If there is a Foundation course on they have priority to the area.

    • You have more access to the studio and are welcome to come to do further work on Monday-Thursday from 1-5pm, Friday 1-3pm. This is when the studio is quietest and we are happy for you to use it when you like, you don’t need to contact with us to arrange this. If you are dropping in quickly to drop things off or move work around you can do this at any time.

    • We do not cap firing your work or have a cost per kg. This being said, if you are producing a large amount of work to sell outside Clayschool events or commercially it is expected that you talk to us about this and we will come up with an arrangement. We are not a firing service, but we believe that firing is a big part of your learning journey.

    • We are a working studio so things will move and change over time. If you have any questions please ask your teachers.

  • We often get national and international artists delivering specialised workshops. These are often timed in school holidays or weekends and are usually filled within the Clayschool community.

    • Workshops are paid in advance prior to the date.

    • If you cannot make a workshop within 3 weeks of the date you will forfeit the fee’s or if you find someone to we are happy for you to swap with them.

    • Prior to 3 weeks if you decide to cancel a $200 deposit will be retained for administration costs.

    • At times we take photos & film at Clayschool Brisbane to use for advertising online and in print.

    • Clayschool Brisbane will use photography taken onsite and at Clayschool events to advertise the school, any classes or any event.

    • If you are uncomfortable with having any your work or yourself photographed please make yourself known to Jen Hillhouse.

    • Kiln Processing

      • Please be mindful of work on the “biscuit in” and “glaze in” shelves.

      • Studio assistants and teachers will make decisions about kiln packing with the work that is availble. Some work will be problematic (large, tall) and may take longer to get through the system. The decisions will be around the best pack for the kiln.

      • If a piece is cracked, broken, has glaze on the base or has other issues, it may be placed on the “doom shelf” to be discussed with your teacher.
