The Bowl:
An introduction by Kylie Johnson
A bowl, a humble and poetic form and used for millennia in the daily use of all peoples around the world. Not just made of clay, but stone, wood, and fibre. A bowl is the most primative of forms, and one to be celebrated.
A quote by the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu ‘Mould clay into a bowl. The empty space makes it useful’ is a wonderful starting point for anyone using clay and thinking about proportion and space in creating a vessel either on the wheel or hand built. Japanese potters often create their tea bowls using the the Kurinuki technique where a lump of clay is carved into and the clay removed, literally creating the empty space where once it was solid, building the walls the opposite way to handbuilding and throwing.
There is merit and beauty in all forms and ways to create a bowl.
An empty space for food cooked to be eaten, fruit to sit in, or simply to admire.
