Explore the world of ceramic colour and drawing without using glazes! With a painterly approach, learn to work in an intuitive, expressive way to get layered, sophisticated surfaces, using a mix of underglazes, oxides and glaze stains taking your work to the next level.
Shannon's workshop begins with creative inspiration, getting your ideas to take flight through porcelain, drawing, colour, photography. A tea bowl will serve as the initial inspiration, this small vessel is the conduit to wider ideas ranging from the importance of line, the true weight of volume, how to solve technical design issues in all mediums from textiles to painting, and what to do when your are at a creative dead end.
Designed as a creative boost for all artist’s from beginners to experienced, germinate your ideas and experience intense bursts of inspiration.
WHAT TO BRING:
6 -10 unfired pieces to decorate. Any clay but also bring some white clay pieces. BRING GREENWARE (ie. UNFIRED PIECES). Bisqued pieces are not suitable for this workshop.
4-6 tiles or shards of clay no larger than 15cm x 15cm but smaller pieces are fine too, to decorate they can be handbulit or thrown, as rough as you like for experimenting on.
Brushes (fat and thin at least 4 brushes I use calligraphy brushes but watercolour brushes are also good.
2 cheap acrylic brushes for shellac
Sgraffito tools- pin tools
2 x metal ribs
A couple of small jars for shellac
Sketchbook
Pens and pencils
Scissors
Camera or phone camera
Paint palettes (You can also bring 6-8 lids from jars to use as palettes, ceramic tools, pin tools, plastic bucket for water, banding wheel if you have one
teatowel or old towel
Images of ceramics, and artworks that inspire you and images of nature, patterns and colours you want to include in your project. Some people bring drawings, some people bring photographs or little scraps torn out of magazines, some people bring objects, twigs, pieces of bark, shells...your imagination is the limit!
WHAT’S INCLUDED
Everything you need to decorate your work: Oxides, slips, shellac, & other materials. If you have something specific you’d like to use please bring this along

ABOUT SHANNON
Shannon Garson is an Australian ceramic artist, writer and curator with a studio practice spanning 20 years that includes commissions for festivals, exhibitions at public and private galleries, and arts advocacy. Shannon began her creative life as a painter and this is evident in the intricate drawings that move across the surface of her thrown porcelain vessels. Shannon also works across a range of media using drawing, ceramics , photography and performance to investigate the relationship between human activity and the infinite variety of striations, spots, and marks found in nature.
